Federal Inspectors Say Mine Operators Improperly Detonated Explosives, Failed to Properly Vent Gasses

Mine Safety and Health Administration administrator Joe Main said Tuesday managers of the mine near Ouray improperly detonated deteriorated explosives in a mine shaft in an attempt to dispose of them, filling the area with toxic gas. Regulators say mine operators failed to seal off the area or ventilate it, and they ignored complaints from miners.

A woman has been killed by a falling tree in London as the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo lashed Britain with rain and strong winds.  Several other people across the country were injured by falling branches, and the wind brought down trees onto railway lines.

Gas Pipe Explosion Kills One in Germany

Authorities say one person was killed and 11 were injured in an explosion after a gas pipe was damaged during construction work in a western German city.  Gas transport company Gascade said it wasn't clear why the gas pipe, part of a 57-kilometer (35-mile) pipeline that leads southward to the city of Karlsruhe, was damaged during work that it commissioned.

Officials Say 407 People Rescued in Nepal after Blizzards

At least 39 people, including trekkers from Canada, India, Israel, Slovakia, Poland and Japan, died in the blizzards and avalanches that swept the Himalayas last week, battering the popular Annapurna trekking circuit. Nepalese officials said they rescued 407 people, 226 of them foreigners.

Fireworks Factory Blaze Kills 13 in India

A blaze engulfed a fireworks factory in southern India on Monday, killing at least 13 workers and seriously burning seven others, police said.  The fire department was still trying to control the fire by early evening and the bodies could not immediately be retrieved.
