As our industry matures and more organizations address the challenges of both business continuity and disaster recovery, some subtle differences between the two disciplines are causing some confusion and problems for different groups within an organization. This session is designed to explain the subtle differences between designing recovery solutions for business processes versus implementing technology solutions that support these processes.
Concepts behind and benefits of performing a pure business impact analysis will be discussed and compared to a technology impact analysis – which is what most companies end up conducting. There is a difference between answering the question, “What is the impact to the firm if we cannot settle trades?” versus, “What is the impact to the firm if we lose the trade settlement systems?” We will also discuss workarounds and potential technology swaps that can influence the IT recovery solutions that are designed to assist the BCP program.
This session will put BCP concepts in terms the technologist can appreciate and understand. Having both sides of the house understanding what their counterparts
are trying to achieve and appreciating the challenges and roadblocks that they encounter may lead to a more cooperative environment where we can all achieve our planning goals.
